Is it worth repairing or time to replace?
A simple framework for laptops and desktops.
A slow, glitchy or broken computer is frustrating — and the first question is always the same: do I fix it or buy a new one? Spend on a repair and it might fail again next month; replace it and you might have thrown away a machine with years left in it.
Here's a simple way to make the call with confidence.
1. How old is it?
Age is the biggest factor. As a rough guide, laptops last around 3–5 years and desktops 5–7 with good care. A two-year-old machine is usually worth repairing; a seven-year-old one often isn't, because other parts will soon follow.
2. Apply the 50% rule
If a repair costs more than about half the price of an equivalent new machine, replacement is usually the better value — especially on older hardware. A cheap fix on a newer machine, on the other hand, is almost always worth it.
3. What's actually wrong?
Some faults are cheap, high-value fixes; others signal deeper problems.
- Usually worth repairing: RAM upgrades, SSD swaps, new battery, cracked screen, keyboard, charging port, virus cleanup
- Think carefully: motherboard failure, liquid damage, repeated overheating, multiple simultaneous faults
Often the best-value upgrade of all is fitting an SSD and more RAM to an older machine — it can feel brand new for a fraction of replacement cost.
4. Does it still meet your needs?
Even if a machine can be fixed, ask whether it can still do what you need. If it struggles with your everyday software even when healthy, replacing it is the smarter long-term move.
5. How critical is the machine?
For a business machine that can't afford downtime, reliability matters more than saving a little on a repair. For a secondary or personal device, a budget repair may be perfectly fine.
A quick rule of thumb
- Newer + cheap fault → repair
- Older + expensive fault → replace
- Slow but healthy → upgrade (SSD + RAM)
- Business-critical + unreliable → replace
