CCTV is one of the most effective ways to protect a home or business in Ghana — but only when it is set up correctly. This guide answers the questions we hear most often, and helps you get clear, reliable footage day and night.

What type of CCTV camera do I need?

Dome cameras

Discreet and tamper-resistant — ideal for offices, shops, reception areas and indoor spaces.

Bullet cameras

Long-range and weatherproof — best for gates, walls, car parks and building perimeters.

Turret cameras

Excellent night vision with less glare — a popular all-round choice for both indoor and outdoor use.

PTZ cameras (pan · tilt · zoom)

Remotely controllable and able to cover large areas — suited to compounds, warehouses and large premises.

DVR or NVR — which recorder is right?

DVR

Works with analogue cameras over coaxial cable. Lower cost, good for small shops and homes on a budget.

NVR

Works with IP cameras over network cable, giving higher resolution, easier expansion and better remote viewing. Recommended for most new business installations.

How much recording storage do I need?

Storage depends on the number of cameras, their resolution, and how many days of footage you want to keep. As a rough guide:

  • 4 cameras, 1080p, ~2 weeks → around 1TB
  • 8 cameras, 4MP, ~2 weeks → around 2–4TB
  • 16 cameras, 4K, ~30 days → 8TB or more

Use CCTV-rated surveillance hard drives — ordinary desktop drives fail quickly under 24/7 recording.

Can I view my cameras on my phone?

Yes. Almost every modern system supports live and recorded viewing from a smartphone app, anywhere with internet. Softenic configures secure remote access as standard, so you can check your premises from anywhere in the world.

Why is my CCTV footage poor at night?

  • Cameras with weak or no infrared (IR)
  • Dirty or spider-web-covered lenses
  • Bright lights causing glare and blooming
  • Cameras aimed through glass (reflections)
  • Low-resolution cameras stretched too wide

Turret and ColorVu cameras dramatically improve night footage — choose these for entrances and high-risk areas.

Common CCTV problems and quick checks

  • No image → check power supply and cable connections
  • Camera offline → check the network cable and switch
  • Can't view remotely → check internet and app login
  • Recording gaps → check the hard drive health
  • Blurry image → clean the lens and refocus

How often should CCTV be serviced?

At least twice a year: cleaning lenses, checking storage health, updating firmware and confirming every camera records correctly. Softenic offers CCTV maintenance plans so your system is always ready when you need the footage.
